Dear Angelo, you asked me for a report on the World
Show. These are my observations and opinions:
My first impressions of the show were not good. It
took almost an hour to get from the front door of the building into the
exhibition hall ! The over-crowding was intense, and very dangerous. The lighting was very poor. It was like looking at the
birds on a dark evening. Fortunately, the birds were judged under special
lights, but it was not a good experience for the visitors.
Quality
At most World Shows, I see one or two birds that are
outstanding, some that are very good, and then a rapid decline in quality. This
year, I thought the quality was more even, with very many good birds, but none
of the birds stood out as exceptional.
Judging
Judging at the World Show is a big responsibility, and
my general impression was that all the medals were won by good birds. The medal
winners came from many countries, which is a sign of fairness. It would not be
right for me to comment on individual scores because I was viewing the birds
almost a week after the judging, and Lizards can change a lot in that time.
However, there are some features that never change, and I was disappointed to
see that some birds with high scores had bad faults: a frill in the throat;
light feathers running down the neck; and one bird, which should have been
disqualified, had a white feather in the tail. The judges also seemed more
impressed by the quantity, rather than quality, of the rowings. The show standard is quite clear: each dark feather should
be distinct and separate from the others. Yet some birds with continuous dark
stripes on their breast got very high scores.
The high and low points
I was pleased to see that Jules Etienne’s non-cap gold
hen won a gold medal. This bird had won Best Lizard at the Dutch Lizard Dag and
at the Liege Posture Canary Show. I saw her on both occasions, so I know her
well. This is an exceptional bird - the best Lizard I have seen this season (photographs
on your blog of 14 December 2012). She looked tired at Hasselt, but she was
still good enough to win. It is very difficult to keep a Lizard in show
condition for three months, so chapeau Jules!
The biggest looser was the bird with the best spangles
in the show. This was a beautiful non cap gold hen bred by Stan Bolton. In my
opinion, she deserved to win a medal. In the judge’s opinion, she deserved only
87 points.
The future
Is it fair that clear caps, broken caps and non cap
Lizards have to compete in the same class?
This does not happen in other canary breeds. We should
all ask our national associations to campaign for the Lizard classes at future
World Shows to be divided into clear caps, broken caps and non caps, for each
feather type. Perhaps we can start next year in Italy!

mi hai chiesto una relazione sul Campionato Mondiale. Di seguito le mie
osservazioni e le mie considerazioni.
Prima impressione
La mia prima impressione della mostra non è stata buona. Occorreva almeno
una ora per andare dalla porta anteriore dell’edificio fino alla sala
esposizione! Il
sovraffollamento era intenso e molto pericoloso. L’illuminazione era molto
scarsa. Era come
guardare gli uccelli in una serata buia. Fortunatamente, gli uccelli sono stati
giudicati con speciali luci, ma non è stata una bella esperienza per i visitatori.
Qualità
Nella maggior parte dei Campionati Mondiali, io ho visto uno o due uccelli
fuori dal normale, alcuni che erano molto buoni, e poi una rapido declino della
qualità. Quest’anno , io penso che la qualità era abbastanza uniforme , con
molti uccelli buoni, ma nessuno degli uccelli si è distinto quale eccezionale.
Giudizio
Giudicare al
Campionato del Mondo è una grande responsabilità, e la mia impressione generale
è stata che tutte le medaglie sono state vinte da buoni uccelli. I vincitori
delle medaglie provengono da molte nazioni, che è un segno di equità. Non credo
sia giusto che io commenta i punteggi individuali perché io stavo vedendo gli
uccelli quasi dopo una settimana dal giudizio, ed i Lizards possono cambiare
moltissimo in questo tempo. Comunque,ci sono alcune caratteristiche che non
cambiano mai, e sono rimasto deluso nel
vedere che alcuni uccelli con punteggi alti avevano brutti difetti:collarino alla gola, piume chiare dietro il collo, ed un uccello, che sarebbe
dovuto essere squalificato, aveva una penna bianca nella coda. I giudici sembra anche fossero più
impressionati dalla quantità , piuttosto della qualità delle rowings. Lo
standar del lizard è abbastanza chiaro: ogni piuma scura deve essere distinta e separata dalle
altre. Eppure alcuni uccelli con strisce scure continue sul petto hanno
conseguito punteggi molo alti.
I punteggi alti e bassi
Mi ha fatto
piacere vedere che la femmina dorata non cap di Jules Etienne ha vinto la medaglia
d’oro. Questo uccello ha vinto BEST LIZARD alla specialistica Olandese e alla
mostra di Liegi.Io la ho vista in entrambe le occasioni, quindi la conosco
molto bene. Questa è un canarino eccezionale, il più bel Lizard che io ho visto
questa stagione (la fotografia è sul vostro blog del 14 dicembre 2012). Ad
Hasselt appariva stanca, ma era ancora
in forma per vincere. E’ molto difficile mantenere un lizard in condizioni mostra, quindi “tanto di
cappello Jules”!
Il grande sconfitto è stato l’uccello con le più belle scaglie di tutta
la mostra. Questo era una bellissima femmina dorata no cap di Stan Bolton,
Secondo me , meritava di vincere una medaglia. Secondo l’opinione del giudice,
ha meritato solo 87 punti.
Il Futuro
E’ giusto
che calotte nette, calotte spezzate e senza calotte debbano competere nella
stessa categoria?
Non succede
in nessuna altra razza di canarini. Tutti noi dovremmo chiedere alle nostre
associazioni nazionali di chiedere che al prossimo Campionato Mondiale i lizard debbano essere divisi in classi a
secondo la calotta, netta, spezzata o assente, per ogni tipo di piumaggio
(dorato, argentato e blu).
Forse ,
potremmo partire l’anno prossimo in Italia.
